How to decorate for the holidays without going all out

Dec 4, 2024

I understand most everyone has their own decor styles when it comes to decorating for Christmas, but I just wanted to write a brief bit for some ideas if you are stuck or just don’t want to spend much or do much in the way of decorating.

I get it. If you are on social media then I am sure you are thinking this post is waaaaay behind. Most of the accounts I’ve seen have had their Christmas up since November 1st. I can’t do it. Here’s why:

1) I don’t have it in me to do all that before Thanksgiving. It is just too much. I have enough on my plate; 2) I like to enjoy the fall decor and fall colors for as long as I can. We live in Texas and fall here doesn’t really start until December! Last Sunday it was 83º! The highs lately are 66ºF, lows in the 40s. So that is more fall than winter. Our winters don’t really start until January and mostly February. So there’s that.

3) I put up quite a bit of Christmas decor and our family likes to go all in and participate together. I feel like we can all do this after Thanksgiving, so that is our tradition. Are you an early Christmas decorator or after Thanksgiving decorator? (Tell me in the comments👇🏼)

But, there are little inexpensive things you can do to decorate if you have a small space, don’t want/have a tree, or if you just don’t want a lot of decor out, or any of the above.

Mini wreaths

One of my favorite and super inexpensive ways to decorate for Christmas is mini wreaths. The possibilities are endless with these! They can go on the front of kitchen cabinet doors by hanging them over the top of the door and placing a command hook upside down on the top inside of the cabinet door. Yes, upside down. Then the ribbon hooks on. Works like a charm! These are not my cabinets, as we have open shelving in our kitchen, but I wanted to share it with those of you that have them. I just placed mine on the shelves.

Another fun way to use mini wreaths is over the tops of bathroom or decorative mirrors. I do this in the half bath and guest room & guest bathroom. These wreaths are actually candle rings so you can get them 10 for $12!! I just added red satin ribbon and hung them with tape.

Pillows

Pillows are a great way to decorate for any season or holiday. I have soooo many pillows I was just telling my husband the other day I need to list some on FBMP! I am a little pillow happy. Oops. I have pillows for winter, spring, summer, 4th of July, fall, Halloween—you get the idea. But for Christmas…I am not ashamed to admit I probably have over 10 pillows. Don’t come for me. The most inexpensive way to switch out pillows is to buy one pillow you love in a universal size (18 x 18 is the most popular) and then just buy the covers for different seasons or holidays. I realize the cutest pillows are bought as a full pillow and not a cover, but I try to shop online for covers if and when I can. I also like to have some lumbar pillows and big 22 x 22 pillows for beds so I buy inserts for those and then the covers. Don’t discount the fun shaped ones too—like Santa or Christmas trees!

Pro tip: if you have a 22 x 22 pillow cover you want an insert that is a size up so it fills it out. So a 24 x 24 insert. No, it won’t be too tight—trust me on this! For an 18 x 18 pillow cover you’ll buy 20 x 20 insert. Here are some great pillows for this time of year that I am currently loving (but refraining from buying!)

Mini Christmas trees

If you don’t have room, the budget, or just do not want a big tree, buying a small Christmas tree can be so fun! I have the 24″ trees in my boys‘ rooms and in Andy’s office and our guest room each year. There is not reason why you cannot have one in your main living area too if you aren’t a 6’+ tall tree person!

Another really fun option is to collect all different trees in all sizes, textures and materials. I display my trees in our dining room every year on the hutch and still add to it each year if I see a tree on sale throughout the year. Bottlebrush trees are the easiest, most inexpensive way to start this collection and they can go anywhere!

If you want my honest opinion, one of the cutest ways to decorate and make it super fun is to just build and put out this adorable Lego Christmas tree. How cute would this be displayed in your home?

Tell me what fun, simple ways do you like to decorate for the holidays in your home?
