Last minute inexpensive (or free!) Christmas decor ideas

Dec 20, 2022

Sometimes life gets in the way this time of year or you just don’t have it in you to decorate. If you are having guests or visitors over and you feel like you want to add just a few holiday touches, here are a few ideas that might make your home more festive with either things you already have, or items that are very inexpensive, especially since most stores now have all the holiday decor marked way down.

Create vignettes

If you don’t already know what a vignette is, it is a group of items or pieces to create a little scene or decor element on shelves, countertops, tables, etc. I often use nativity scenes for vignettes this time of year because I have collected them over the years and they are so easy and often cute and fun too. You can do this with figurines of Santa, reindeer, Elf of the Shelf, bottle brush trees—anything you want.

This nativity is on the shelf behind the toilet in our half bathroom. It is a tiny little decoration that shows how a cute little detail can make an impact.

Bowls of decor

Another great way to make really fun but impactful decor is to gather similar or like items and add them to a bowl, tray or clear vase. Ornament balls are a great way to do this because if you’re anything like me, you always have extras or buy extras when they go on super sale at the end of the season. Right now the dollar stores, Big Lots, Walmart and Target all have their ornaments marked down to very, very cheap. It’s a great time to buy! Candy canes, peppermints, chocolates, a collection of Santas, elves, nutcrackers or anything holiday related are also great ideas to throw in a bowl, tray or vase. Here are several bowls, a tray and a vase full of items like this.

Holiday Cards

Using your previous years or this years favorite greeting or holiday cards are an amazing way to create art really quickly, easily, and very inexpensively! I just LOVE this holiday card and I usually have extra little frames in a box. If you don’t have extra frames you can buy them at craft stores for very little. If you want to make a bigger impact buy the big frames with the mattes that are matted to a 4×6 or 5×7 for your card. An example is buying an 11×14 or 16×20 framed that is matted to fit the smaller sizes. They look so elegant! I didn’t have one of those and didn’t want to buy one, but I might do that next year for this amazing little card. Isn’t it the most lovely?

Flowers &/or Greenery

Adding flowers is simple but beautiful way to add life and color to your space(s) for very little. Cut them from your yard, or if a neighbor has some you can cut, or even grocery store or Trader Joe’s has great small bouquets for very little!

I hope these ideas sparked some creativity in you to go add some last minute, easy, and inexpensive decor to your home or space!
