ORC Fall ’22: Guest Bath Reveal

Well, I know it is well past the challenge end date, but I finally completed our guest bathroom makeover and I couldn’t love it more! I’ll show you in this post how I painted the tile in the shower and the bathtub, although..eh hem…I didn’t take any pics of me painting the tub. {facepalm}

First, let’s take a look at how this tub looked before. Then we can appreciate the after. Ooh that tan tile and that fresh, white and blue wallpaper.

Blech! While I didn’t a) have it in me to want to learn how to tile right now, I did remember my favorite paint ever…Heirloom Traditions for painting countertops, tubs and showers. I used it on my boys bathroom makeover to paint their countertops and sinks. It has been 3 years and it is still holding up perfectly!

How to paint countertops, tile & tub

To start, I cleaned with Krud Kutter and applied Liquid Sandpaper to give a light scuff. Then I applied Stix Waterborne Bonding Primer made for slick surfaces. I then brushed on the HTP Cashmere White paint and then followed with a foam roller to smooth it out. This took 3 coats. Heirloom Traditions suggests waiting at least 3 hours between coats. After that you want to apply the HTP Water Resistant Sealer the same way. Brush, then roll. Let it dry at LEAST 3 hours between coats and you will need 3 coats, although since this is a shower and tub I did 4. You have to let it cure for 3-4 days before use and that‘s IT! Such an easy process, allbeit tedious and time consuming, it is so worth it.

Grout Lines

I thought about just leaving the tile all white, but as Andy said: wow, you really like doing the tedious stuff, don‘t you? Sooo….I ordered a light gray grout pen and pulled up an image of a tile pattern I liked on Pinterest. And so it was born…my “grouted” tile! I think it turned out great!

Finishing Touches

I attached all the trim and baseboards, touched up any paint I saw that needed it, and hung a beautiful piece of art from my favorite local artist, Maren Devine. Isn’t she perfect for this space? And the colors are perfect too.

Since this is a guest bath, I really wanted some great towels. I’ve read and heard so much about Turkish towels so I ordered these after scouring reviews. These towels feel like a soft blanket!! They are also a great size too, much bigger than standard bath towels. They are also beautiful to look at!

So let’s recap of all we did in here and then we can look at where we started vs. where we’ve come!

Painted granite countertops white with marble veining
Installed vinyl peel & stick marble floor tiles over the cork
Replaced the sink faucet with a brushed gold, modern one
Added board & batten all throughout the room and painted it navy with Fusion Mineral Paint
Added a fun, bold pattern of peel & stick wallpaper by NuWallpaper
Changed out the vanity light for a brushed gold one and added brighter lights
Added a runner in front of the shower/tub and a fun rug layered under it in front of the vanity
Added a beautiful and uniquely shaped mirror
Added 3 towel hooks
Added a towel ring for a hand towel (there wasn’t one in here!)
Painted the shower tile and bathtub white and added “grout lines” to the tile for a pattern
Added a window curtain on a rod above the shower for a curated look
And, one of my favorites…added a sensored trash can!
Added a lovely piece of art in a vintage frame
